Dinamika Komunikasi Digital Generasi Z dalam Penguatan Literasi Media pada Pendidikan Islam
Abstract
Objective: This study aims to examine the impact of social media use on Generation Z’s communication patterns, particularly interpersonal communication and digital identity formation among Communication Science students. Method: A mixed-methods approach with a concurrent triangulation design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 120 students through surveys, while qualitative data were obtained from 15 in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Most respondents used social media for 4–8 hours daily, primarily Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp. The findings showed that social media use significantly affected interpersonal communication patterns, increasing preferences for asynchronous communication while reducing face-to-face interaction and active listening skills. It also encouraged the development of digital identities that differed from real-life identities. Conclusion: Social media significantly shapes Generation Z’s communication patterns. While it enhances connectivity and social networking, excessive use may weaken direct interpersonal communication and widen the gap between digital and real identities. Strengthening digital literacy and communication skills is therefore essential.
